Why split an image

Splitting is the practical answer to a layout that expects several images where you have one. Instagram carousels and profile grids are the common case: a single wide photo cut into three or nine pieces reads as one picture on the profile page while still being posted as separate images.

It is also how large diagrams get printed on ordinary paper. Cut a poster into a 2×3 grid, print each tile at full size, and join them — far simpler than persuading a printer to tile the page for you.

Where the cuts fall

Tiles are cut on an even grid, and because image dimensions rarely divide neatly, the remainder has to go somewhere. This tool gives it to the last row and column rather than discarding it, so every pixel of the original survives in exactly one tile. A 1000 px wide image cut into three columns produces two 333 px tiles and one 334 px tile.

The alternative — rounding down and dropping the remainder — would silently shave a strip off the right and bottom edges. That is easy to miss on a photograph and obvious on a diagram, so it is not what happens here.

As a single ZIP file. Browsers only allow one automatic download per click, so sending nine separate files would quietly deliver just the first one. Each tile inside is named by position, like photo_r2c3.jpg for row 2, column 3.

The leftover pixels are added to the last row and column, so every pixel of your original ends up in exactly one tile. Nothing is trimmed or duplicated, which means a few tiles can be a pixel or two larger than the rest.

Up to 10 rows and 10 columns, capped at 100 tiles in total. The grid also cannot be finer than the image has pixels.

Each tile is cut from the original pixels, so there is no resizing. JPEG tiles are re-encoded at high quality; choose a PNG source if you need the tiles to be pixel-exact.

Yes — the 3×3 preset is the standard Instagram grid. Square your image first with the Square Image tool if you want each tile to be a perfect square.
