PDF supports image transparency through a soft mask, and that is what this converter uses: a PNG with an alpha channel is embedded losslessly and its transparency is carried into the PDF rather than being painted over. Because a PDF page itself has no colour, viewers draw the page on white, so transparent regions normally read as white on screen and in print.
