For online PAN card applications via NSDL (Protean eGov Technologies) and UTIISL, a recent passport-size photograph in JPEG format is required. The maximum file size is 50 KB. The recommended dimensions are 200×230 pixels. The photo must have a plain white background, be recent, and clearly show the applicant's full face without any obstructions.
Both new PAN applications (Form 49A for Indian citizens, Form 49AA for foreign citizens) and PAN correction/update requests require the same photograph format — JPEG under 50 KB at approximately 200×230 px. Common reasons for PAN photo rejection include: file size over 50 KB, non-JPEG format, blurry or low-resolution image, coloured background, wearing glasses or headgear, and photos older than six months.
