US passport photos must be 2×2 inches (51×51 mm) — 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI digitally — in JPEG format under 240 KB. The background must be plain white or off-white with no shadows. The head must be centred, facing the camera directly, with the face occupying 50–69% of the frame. Glasses are no longer permitted in US passport photos as of 2016.
Most countries follow the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standard for passport photos: 35×45 mm or 50×50 mm physical, with the face centred on a white background. For digital submissions, 600×600 px at 300 DPI is the widely accepted equivalent for square-format passport photos. For non-square formats (35×45 mm), use our standard image resizer.
The Indian Passport Seva Portal accepts a 600×600 px JPEG with a white background for online photo uploads. Physical passport applications require a 35×35 mm (square) colour photo on white background. The digital 600×600 px format is also accepted for Tatkal applications and re-issue applications via the online portal.
